Are Your Business Emails Secured?

Fraudsters are now increasingly targeting business emails. According to FBI data, more than 22,000 businesses -- small and big-sized-- got targeted through dubious emails between October 2013 and May 2016. Losses amounting from scam-emails (actual and attempted) rose to $3 billion during this period, according to the FBI, cited by Financial Times.
Cyber-frauds swindle businesses using several tricks. For instance; in some cases impostors pose as a chief executive, or company’s consultant, asking an employee to remit money in an overseas account. And before the company realizes that it got conned, cyber-frauds siphon-off the transferred cash. There are growing incidents of cyber-frauds where criminals hack email accounts and alter bank-accounts’ information to route payments meant for suppliers.
Likewise, there is growing threat to internet-enabled devices, especially smartphones. These devices are increasingly vulnerable to hacking as more and more people conduct banking transactions through mobile phones and store sensitive data and passwords.
Such frauds will only rise in the future as business operations turn increasingly digitized even as individuals conduct financial transactions through smartphones. Preventing cyber-frauds rests solely on us. Database servers, email servers, and application servers— all are more vulnerable to hacking now than even before. It is up to organizations to lock down and appropriately configure security parameters on various servers and network platforms. Deploying Secured Configuration Management solution and Identity and Access Control solutions in IT infrastructure would certainly add a security layer to prevent frauds.
